Itinerary for the istria week:

Week 1 - Week 3 - week 5 - week 7 -

Day 1: arrival day - zagreb

Welcome! We look forward to meeting you on this Photo journey! Upon arrival at the Zagreb Intl Airport, you will be met and transported to your hotel where we will greet you in Zagreb’s City Center. Here, we will meet for a quick review of photo gear you may want to use for our first excursion. After that, relax for the evening or perhaps take a stroll around the Ban Jelicic Square, filled with many restaurants and cafes, as well as wonderful Slasticarnas (ice cream & dessert cafes). Our photo journey will begin very early, so do not unpack just yet and get some rest…Remember, each day of our journey will have photo discussion and tips.

day 2: zagreb —> plitvitce lakes national park —> pag island

Nutrition begins early…then, we grab our bags and head to our first UNESCO World Heritage site of Plitvitce Lakes National Park. We will hike the trails to capture beautiful images of waterfalls, wooden bridges over streams, and the gorgeous flora and fauna. There will be much to see and photo. Plitvitce is a treat for the eyes and the soul. In the early afternoon, we depart to Island Pag - our base-camp for the next two days. Our modern condo accommodations in Novalja will be at the friendly, Ville Sunca (link).

Day 3: pag island

Exploration of Island Pag begins early. On Day 3, we typically opt to use this day as sort of a “chill day” allowing the body to settle into it’s new time-zone and environment. Island Pag is known for its monolithic moonscape topography, as found on Metanja and Rucica. This unusual landscape is a natural phenomena occurring from centuries of Bura winds. Settled in the Bronze Age, this highly unique island is filled with numerous photographic locations not seen elsewhere in the country. Here, we will visit some of the ancient Roman areas, paddle, swim, snorkel, relax. Take our boat (weather permitting) and explore the neighboring island of Dolfin, or the amazing Zavratnica Bay.

Day 4: zadar

After our Day 3 rejuvenation, we take the pace back up a notch and journey to our second UNESCO World Heritage site: the walled city of Zadar. This city has so many amazing photo ops and will also offer many photographic challenges to learn from…and, what a great location to learn! The history is also fascinating, with life dating back to the Stone Ages. In 59 BC this stone-walled village, was renamed Ladera when it became a Roman municipium. In 48 BC, it became a Roman colonia. It was during the Roman rule that Zadar acquired the characteristics of a traditional Ancient Roman city with a regular road network, a public square Forum, and an elevated Capitolium with a temple. Of course we will visit the famous Sea Organ and Sun Dial! It is truly a unique experience all packed into one area. Even Alfred Hitchcock visited Zadar and is quoted as saying, “Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West, Florida.” It is pretty amazing and we will plan to experience our sunset there as well…

Day 5: PAG island -> pula

Today we say “Bok” (bye) to Island Pag in the early morning for another epic day of photography. This will be a big day as we travel to the seaport city of Rijeka - link here. We will explore some different scenery and take gorgeous pictures of the Habsburg-era buildings, the Trsat Castle and much more. After our short stop in Rijeka, we travel onward to the pièce de résistance of the Istrian Peninsula: Pula. Here, we will be romanced by the 24bc Gladiator Amphitheater, the Arch of Sergii and the Temple of Augustus. This will be a great lesson of varying angles, exposures etc. in getting “that perfect shot”.

day 6: rovinj

With four epic days behind us, we begin to wind down a little, but not all the way down as we still have an amazing day ahead. Destination: Rovinj. One of the most romantic cities in all of Europe and surrounded with great legends…it’s no wonder the famous lover Giacomo Casanova visited this city… We will experience the city by foot inside and out and find stunning ‘postcard views’ that will have you giddy with excitement.

day 7: rovinj -> zagreb

Today, we travel from Rovinj to Zagreb. Time allowing, we will explore the upper town of Zagreb via the Funicular Railway. In the upper town, you will find St Marks Church, the Croatian Parliament, the famous Kamenita Vrata (The Stone Gate), and one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe called “K Crnom Orlu” (“At the Black Eagle”) where Dante’s great-grandson once worked. Zagreb’s beautiful Cathedral can not be missed. This is a great time to do some shopping, take more photos and soak it all in. At days end, we will meet again and have our ‘retreat finale’ group dinner. We look forward to sharing thoughts and stories of the amazing week.

DAY 8: bon voyage

This day is all yours. We consider all our travel guests as our new friends and hope that your journey met all it’s expectations. Allowing us to be part of your experience in a country we are so passionate about is truly a gift for us too. Thank you…
